 World Environmental Day

            (Activities and Celebration)

ENVIS Centre with Department of Forests & Environment, Chandigarh Administration celebrated ‘World Environment Day’ on 5th June, 2015 by organizing various activities in the city of Chandigarh.

·         First of all, department in collaboration with Youth Innovative Society organized an  ‘Environment  Awareness Bicycle Rally’ at 7:30 AM, at Smriti Van behind Tennis Court (Lake Club)  which was flagged off by Sh. Vijay Dev, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh. This Cycle Rally was started from Smriti Van and culminated at Nature Interpretation Centre, Regulator End at Sukhna Lake covering about 3.5 km of trek.  Around 200 participants of NSS units of UT Chandigarh, Schools, Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association, participated in this event. The aim of this Cycle Rally was to spread the message of Environment Conservation among various stakeholders of the society and to promote cycling in the City.


·         The “State of Environment Report-2014” was released by Shri Vijay Dev, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh at Elante Mall in Industrial Area at 12:30 hr.  This “State of Environment Report-2014” is a prominent step towards educating the people about the major environmental aspects of Chandigarh and to provide the knowledge banks with the latest facts & figures of the city related to five important environmental issues like Land Use Pattern, Air Quality, Water, Waste Management and Energy of the city.  It was anticipated that through this Report, the State Governments and UT Administrations would be able to integrate environmental dimensions in their social, economic and sustainable development planning.  On this occasion, a Short Documentary Film was also shown to showcase the efforts taken by Chandigarh Administration for promotion of Solar Energy in UT Chandigarh.

   Similarly in another function, 50 kWp Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant at Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (CIHM), Sec. 42-D, Chandigarh was inaugurated by Shri Vijay Dev, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh. This was the 100th Solar Plants commissioned by CREST in last 2-3 years

·         Further, Shri Vijay Dev also inaugurated a ‘Composting Machine’ of 25 kg capacity at Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (CIHM), Sec. 42-D. CIHM is now set to become a Green campus with green initiative of Solar power generation, Solar water heating and decentralized solid waste management facility and shall act as role model for other institutes to follow.

·         Street play on Swachh Bharat by the students of St. Stephen School
